On October 23, 1969 a tragic explosion and fire in the engine room of HMCS Kootenay

took the lives of nine seaman and injured more than 50 others in one of the worst

peacetime disasters in the history of the Canadian Navy.


 

 

To commemorate this tragedy, many former crew members, their families and

friends participated in a Pilgrimage to Plymouth England during

the first week of October 2009.


In Halifax NS on October 23, 2009 the 40th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremonies

were held at the Bonaventure Anchor Memorial in Point Pleasant Park and St. Brendan's

Chapel at CFB Halifax. A tree was planted in Admiralty Gardens as well. Former

crew members, their families and friends also attended a Meet and Greet at the

Fleet Club and reception at The Bridge at Juno Tower.
